Calling all Black Males for the 100 Black Male Educators Speak Project!

Dr. Kimberly Underwood is the Research Chair of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion Research at the University of Phoenix.

She and her research team are conducting a research study entitled “100 Black Male Educators Speak” project.

This project follows their year-long collaboration with NNSTOY, examining the career trajectories of Black Male educators in our nation’s P-12 classrooms.

What is the purpose of this research?

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to explore the socialization process and
experiences of Black male educators (BMEs) in P-12 school classrooms across the nation. This
research seeks to specifically explore the early experiences of learning the organization,
understanding the role of BMEs as teachers within organizational structures, relationship building
with colleagues and leadership, and BMEs insight on how to diversify current teacher ranks in P-
12 education.

There is limited research in this areas and additional research should shed some important insight on how to best diversify the teaching profession, especially as it relates to the recruitment and retention of Black male educators.

Organizations such as Profound Gentlemen support Black male educators. I recommend PG to school districts and charter school organizations seeking to recruit and retain Black male educators. I am also lending my blog #iAmABlackMaleEducator to highlight the voices of Black male educators across the country. Any BME's interested can email iamablackmaleeducator@gmail.com.

To participate in the 100 Black Male Educators Speak study, you should meet the following requirements:

• Black male teacher in a P-12 classroom or a Black male teacher who has left the
classroom within the last three years;
• Between the ages of 20-85; and
• Have at least one year of classroom teaching experience.
What procedures are involved?
Participation will involve:

• Participating in a recorded audio/video Zoom interview (1 hour)
