The Best Gifts to Give Black Boys for Christmas

We have to be intentional about what do for Black boys during the holidays. I took time to ask my Black male scholars what they would like to receive as a gift for Christmas before we ended school for the holiday break. 

One of the most important pieces of the conversation that stuck with me were the commonality of interests over time among Black boys.

Drones or Electronic Automobiles 

Definitely ensure your Black son, nephew, god child, grandchild or cousin has a drone that they can fly throughout the sky. President Obama helped make drones popular among Black boys being the President that utilize drones for information during his presidency. Plus drones are really cool and one of the most popular areas of robotics and steam programs in public schools. 

Also, electronic ships, trucks, motorcycles and other gadgets are widely popular among Black boys. 

Comic Books

I thought it was an old tradition, but comic books have made a come back in the new millennium. Thanks to the Black Panther movie and now the television series Watchmen and Black Lightning, Black boys have sparked a new interest in comic books. 

Of course, this is one of my favorite gifts I recommend. You have the artwork that sparks creativity, dialogue and background stories that infuse literacy and of course the action. it's all about the action. 

Comic books worked really well with helping my Black boys with ADHD grasp dialogue, imagery and other elements of the story. 

Music and Sound Engineering 

From the jukebox, to disc changers, to walk-men and cd players, music has always had a special place in the hearts of Black boys. Music is also a good way to get Black boys engaged in learning. During this month, I interested and rock/soul artist, P.J. Morton, to my students. His music really resonated with my Black boys with autism. The were very intrigued with the sound production and engineering of the music. Sound and tones can be challenging for Black boys with autism which causes them to withdraw socially. However, the music seems to be a happy balance for Black boys with autism. 

Over the holiday break, don't break the bank. Instead, get thought gifts that Black boys will like and ultimately appreciate many years to come.
