All Children Deserve to Be Visible.

All children deserve to be visible. Even in the most diverse and largest school district in Georgia. Over the years, I have interacted with and heard from parents in Gwinnett who have experienced extreme racial biases 

COVID-19 has proven that we must empower the voices of students, parents and teachers in order for us to truly see the equity we desire and that all children deserve in public school districts across America. Original post can be found here. 

What we visibly see is an increase of new homes being built, which could seem to many as an improvement to our community.  However, we are still faced with nearly 56% of the families in our school system economically disadvantaged. (Figures are based on free and reduced lunch data from GCPS). 

We are also grappling with an increase in homelessness.  The question becomes about the affordability of housing in the community and how we are addressing those needs, particularly as it pertains to purchases and sales of land deals by our school system. 

In addition, 2019 data shows for the first time, Gwinnett County Public Schools’ graduation rate fell below the state’s rate of 82%.  GCPS dropped from 81.7% to 80.9%. See more here: https://www.wabe.org/georgias-high-school-graduation-rate-hits-high-of-82-percent/

GCPS could visibly show how the school system improves the community by working to ensure ALL children regardless of where they live (apartments, condos, or homes) have access to high-quality education.  

Gwinnett County deserves school board members who understand parents. The original post, was developed by a parent in Gwinnett county who would work to review current policies and help develop policies that impact ALL our children’s everyday lives and determine equitable support to help ensure that our children become viable contributing members of our community. With these measures we should visibly see improvement in our community.
