Historic Black Communities in Atlanta Continue to Produce Greatness
Mahlon West is graduating senior from Booker T Washington High School in Atlanta, Ga. He grew up on the westside of Atlanta as the oldest of six in a single-parent household.
As a leader in the community, in the classroom and on the field he is showing other young Black males in inner city Atlanta communities that you too can make it!
This young brother has used his love for learning and innate leadership abilities to thrive not only in academics but in athletics as well. He is a captain on Washington’s football team, a member of HOSA, Project Excel, American Explorers, HCOP Summer Medical program and named BTW’s Mr. Washington.
Mahlon is now a full-time college student at Georgia State University and will graduate with over 35 college credits. He's held many leadership roles during his tenure at the historic Washington high school tenure but is proud of creating the school’s first debate team.
He is a first-generation college student. For many families in the Black community with first generation graduates, not having a traditional graduation ceremony is heartbreaking. However, the celebration will happen once this passes.
Mahlon is the VALEDICTORIAN of BTW’s Class of 2020. As of today he has been accepted into 30+ colleges and universities with Georgia Tech and Emory University being at the top of that list.
His favorite quote is, “The dream is free but the hustle is sold separately.” This quote has inspired his drive for success throughout his life and has helped guide him through tough times.
In the future, Mahlon will be attending Howard University. He plans to graduate with a degree in Health Management and eventually begin to open up clinics and hospitals in underrepresented communities.
